I want to get a job. Java, or C++?

If I had to choose one language to learn, only taking into account that I want to get a job programming, which of these two languages should I learn?

I want to get a job. Java, or C++?
It depends on what kind of programming you want to do. i.e. web applications or mainframe applications.

The languages aren't that different. Learn both.
Reply:Depends. Frankly, there are far more jobs globally in Java.

I should point out, if you really can do Java, then you can do C++ no problem....and vice versa. Same syntax really...just make different kinds of programs usually used for different stuff. Most people start with learning Java though, it's a little simpler in practice.
Reply:I am in the IT industry, and I can tell you that there are many more jobs for Java programmers. That opens up the world of EJB's, web services, and portal development. Good luck!
Reply:either one! of course the syntax is different, but no matter what language is your "native" language, the skills are what's transferrable. if you become an expert C++ programmer first, you'll have no problem picking up Java....and vice versa.

To reiterate, you need to have programming skill and a fundamental understanding of how to approach and solve problems using code. after that, learning the languages is a piece of cake! :)

if you really do have to come down off the fence, though, do this: go to several job search websites (Yahoo, Monster, etc.) and search for Java for C++. whichever one has the most openings is the one you might want to go for. at least for the time being, that means that more programmers with that skill are in demand.
