How much money does a A.C. repair dude make?
That depends on the exact position. The top of the food chain is an HVAC engineer and that does require a four year degree in engineering. Salary potential is astronomically high as this field is generally underserved and in high demand. As an engineering field, you will need to take a lot of math courses, as thermodynamics is the heart of all air conditioning systems.
Reply:Your best bet to find out how much an AC repairman makes would be to go to a public technical college and ask the counselor. You could also check out companies specializing in AC (both home or auto) in the Yellow Pages, and ask the people doing repairs locally.

Auto AC involves a knowledge of the same basic principles, but is more complicated because there are many different systems used in cars, and of course, only a small number of cars actually last more than 10 years or so.

Home AC these days normally involves the giant ripoff known as central air. When builders build a house, they normally install the least expensive and least efficient units, because they will not be paying the repair bills or the electricity bills. When people sell a home, the same principle applies. The seller will buy the cheapest and least efficient unit, because he will not be paying for the future owner's repairs or bills.

Central AC is always promoted as the cheapest way to cool a home, and this is true if you cool ALL the home ALL the time.

It would be cheaper if units were made where you could simply cool the rooms you are using, but they don't build systems this way normally, so a simple, high EER window unit in the bedroom is the cheapest way for a smart consumer to stay cool for the least money. Most Americans are not smart consumers, though.

It is a seasonal business in most of the US, so you will need to either move to a place where it is always hot (AZ, HI, FL) or arrange for a second specialty (automotive repair or heating systems) so you will be able to pay your bills in the winter.

Most Americans are totally ignorant about AC or how it works, and can be easily suckered into replacing a unit for thousands of dollars when the only problem is a small cheap component, such as a fuse or a relay. A somewhat dishonest repairmen will make more money being a salesman of new equipment than an actual repairman.

In a small town, there is a lot of repeat business, and the honest repairman will usually come out ahead. In a big city, the trick is to cheat each customer only once.

Angie's list is one way a consumer can check out who is honest, but actually learning what electricity is and what AC is is even better.

A smart person would learn all they could about solar and alternative types of energy, because it will be increasingly important in the future.

A good AC tech with his own business can make a lot more than most MBA's or other college grads. This is because it takes more skill to do the job. But you won't get to wear a necktie, and people will not respect you as much as a lawyer or some sort desk jockey.
