What's the job market in the Washington D.C. area like? Also the surrounding D.C. areas? I'm thinking of moving there for grad school, but am wanting to work while I'm there as well. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Job Market in Washington D.C.?
The job market is good. There are many federal jobs and as with most big cities there are major companies in and around DC including:
XM radio has headquarters in DC
Discovery Channel in Silver Spring(MD)
Marriott Hotels Bethesda (MD)
AOL near Dulles Airport (VA)
and many national newspapers
Reply:I moved to the DC area in 1984 from a rural town. If you are looking for a close-knit, small-town feel; DC does not have it. But calling DC an unfriendly place isn't right either.
I would recommend carefully looking at the neighborhood in which you choose to live. That can make a huge difference in the "friendliness" of the city. In my area folks stay outside a lot, chat, and make friends. In other areas, I notice that no one is outside - folks go in and stay in after work. Think the difference between a high-rise apartment building (no place to congregate) and a garden-style area where folks have outdoors space to meet and great.
There are a lot of smaller communities within the area that are very friendly. I would suggest Takoma Park MD, Del Ray or Rosemont neighborhoods (part of Alexandria VA) or Clarendon in Arlington.
The job market is fairly good - if you want to work for the government, high-tech or service industries.
Reply:Job market is good.
Real Estate market is horrible.
Cost of living is very expensive.
Go somewhere else, I grew up there, and it sucks!
People are mean!
Busy Busy Busy!
Reply:I live and work here in Washington D.C. So I have personal experience.
It's a nice place, loads to do! Weather isn't too great, pretty fast, to be honest people aren't too friendly.
Otherwise-
The job market is strong here, as you know it's mostly government workers, lobbyist, lawyers, non-profits.
What type of work are you looking into doing while you go to graduate school? What graduate school you planning to attend-it depends.
Most young people start with internships/fellowships through programs or their schools. A lot of government agencies have jumpstart career programs.
I say look up craigslist.org- to see what's around.
The washington post.

there are TONS of interns here and there are organizations that recruit many interns such as the washington center.
mind you-it's very expensive to live here. Cost of living is pretty pricey.
good luck!
Reply:try usa jobs for all of the federal job openings. the hiring process can take months so plan ahead,
Reply:Job market is strong. The DC area has a low unemployment rate compared to many other metropolitan areas. There are jobs with the federal government, federal contractors, nonprofit organization, law firms, etc.
